Research Description

Type 2 diabetes patients have a 2.5 times higher risk of heart failure. Changes in cardiac metabolism has been proposed to contribute to the development of heart failure. Dr. J.J. Prompers and co-workers combined in-vivo PET, MRS and MRI to study cardiac function in diabetic and non-diabatic mice. This showed that the cardiac metabolic adaptations in diabetic mice seem to prevent the heart from failing upon pressure overload, suggesting that restoring the balance between glucose and fatty acid utilization is beneficial for cardiac function.
